RONA SUPPORTS DEDICATED LOCAL CHARITY'S RECOVERY WEEK

GRACE TO STAGE SPECIAL EVENTS TO HELP PEOPLE WHO HAVE SUFFERED TRAUMA

Strathkelvin and Bearsden MSP Rona Mackay is supporting a dedicated local charity as it launches a series of special events to help people across East Dunbartonshire who have suffered from life trauma.

The ethos of peer-led Group Recovery Aftercare Community Enterprise (GRACE) based at Hillhead Community Centre at Kirkintilloch is to offer help to anyone who is going through an ordeal, whether addiction, bereavement, homelessness or social isolation.

Along with members and volunteers, GRACE founder, Kirkintilloch man Robert Smith, is holding a number of special events during Recovery Week, starting on Monday, September 2.

These include a 45-minute Recovery Walk on Wednesday, September 4, leaving from Hillhead Community Centre at 10.30am. Other events, taking place at both Hillhead and Auchinairn Community Centre until Friday, September 6 include Recovery Table Olympics – from table tennis to dominoes and draughts – crafting activities, sing-alongs with the See Hear Choir, a Recovery Quiz, Community Yoga, Boxercise, Film Showcase and much more.

Ahead of the special week, local SNP MSP Rona Mackay visited GRACE for a special Q&A session with Robert and members.

She said: “We all have ups and downs in life and many of us have friends and family we can rely on to help us cope – but not everyone is so fortunate. That’s where GRACE comes in.

“Robert continues to work tirelessly to provide a safe space to support anyone who has suffered from trauma.

“It’s always a pleasure to visit GRACE and I was delighted to chat to members and answer their questions as their local representative in the Scottish Parliament.”

Robert said: “It was great to have Rona here. Members really did get a lot out of the Q&A session, quizzing Rona on issues affecting the local community. We need more politicians who are so approachable.”

Founded by Robert back in 2012, GRACE, which is backed by a number of organisations, including East Dunbartonshire Voluntary Action, East Dunbartonshire Alcohol and Drugs Services, East Dunbartonshire Council and the Scottish Government, offers advice, support, fellowship, volunteering opportunities, social activities and educational courses.
